So it sat there as a draft for days even though I so badly wanted to blog. I just couldn’t get over the awkwardness of people in my life knowing I had a blog. Or that I even had the audacity to call myself a blogger with my sub-par skills.
In the end, I realized that starting my blog didn’t have anything to do with my writing. (I learned soon after that I didn’t need to be a great writer to blog– all I had to do was share useful information and mean what I say.) Starting a blog meant coming out of hiding, putting myself out there in a way I never did before, and doing it on a weekly basis. I was scared of the vulnerability and the commitment I was going to put myself through.
And it was true.
I was scared of putting myself out there because once I was out there, I couldn’t control what people think and say about me. I was letting what I thought what their opinions were, get in the way of me being fully-self expressed.
So I went to my drafts and hit “Publish.” Then began my wild journey. And honestly, it got easier after that. The more I blogged, the more I received messages from readers thanking me for helping them, and the more I found myself motivated to blog even more. It turns out, there were actually people waiting for someone like me to help them. They just didn’t know it until they came across my blog. And I didn’t know it until I heard from them.
By the way, if you’re want to start a blog but don’t know where to start, I have a free checklist with everything you need to do before you launch. It’s called the Bold Blogger Launch Checklist. Click here to download it.
If you want to make sure you don’t skip a few steps when you launch your blog, you can use my Bold Blogger Launch Checklist. I broke down the checklist into steps and let you know how much time is needed for each step. So you can schedule it to your planner and know exactly how much time you need to commit to it. Those are 8 reasons why you should start a blog and I hope you gained insight about blogging and what your future could look like with it! And at the very least, I hope you’re no longer on the fence anymore. Drop a comment below on what your biggest takeaway was.
#1 You become a better writer, thinker, and communicator
Most beginner bloggers think they’re not fit for blogging because they’re not a great writer. But the truth is, you only need to write like how you would speak. That’s it! Blogging doesn’t require you to be a professional expert who writes educational essays. In fact, as a blogger, you’re more like a close friend advising to a friend in need.
So it’s actually much better that you write in a conversationally because it’s much easier for your readers to digest. And because of that, you think much deeper on how you can better communicate your advice as well.
When my readers watch my videos, they think I speak naturally as if I’m talking to them in person. A large of being able to do that is because of my writing. I actually write my content beforehand and think deeply about what kind of advice would resonate with them which helps me become a better communicator. And it gets better with practice. You see improvement with each post you write.
#2 You become a thought leader
This means you become the go-to person in your niche when your audience has a question. When you blog, you write articles that help people which establishes yourself as an expert and a leader. And you do it in a way that makes your readers build trust & connect with you.
This also gives you more confidence because now, you’re realizing that you have a special and unique voice with something valuable to say that people want to hear.
#3 You create something you’re proud of that helps people
You become present to the number of people you’ve helped based on something you created. Every comment, every subscriber, every message. These are the results of your hard work– helping people’s lives change for the better.
One of the things I enjoy the most is reading the messages & emails of subscribers who send thank yous for how much I’ve helped and inspired them!
#4 You become a skilled online entrepreneur
As a blogger, you wear many different hats so that means you learn a lot of new skills. Some of those skills are writing, storytelling, branding, web design, digital marketing, social media management, and SEO– at the very least. And not only that, you challenge yourself to be disciplined and patient. Blogging is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s a platform you continuously build day by day, week by week, month by month, and year by year. Just like a business.
It takes a lot to put yourself into gear and start something worthwhile. But you also learn the discipline and patience it takes to expand it. These are important skills necessary to become an online entrepreneur. And you naturally learn these skills along the way as a successful blogger.
#5 It’s an effective way to market your business
If you already sell products/services (or plan to in the future), blogging is one of the best ways to establish your business as an expert in your industry. There’s this thing called inbound marketing, which we won’t get into, but blogging is a large part of it because it drives traffic to your store, converts that traffic into leads which converts them into customers. It’s good business marketing!
#6 If you set yourself up for success, you can make money
And I’m not talking about free things you get in exchange for collaboration. I’m talking about actual money you can spend on the dream camera you’ve always wanted or more sustainable things like rent and bills.
I remember the first time I received my first $100 check, I deposited it to my bank and immediately went to an ATM to withdraw the money and hold it in my hands. It was a pinch-me-I-must-be-dreaming kind of moment. I couldn’t believe I actually made money from something I created at home. It was a great incentive to blog even more.
#7 You can start a blog at a low start-up cost
You might be wondering how much it costs to start a blog. And you can start one for free from platforms like Blogger, Wix, and Squarespace. They have limits but they’re easy to use, easy to navigate and require no programming or web design experience. Actually you don’t need any kind of experience!
But if you want to see your blog through and create something that’s really worthwhile for yourself and your readers, you can start one for $3.95/month. All you need is a website host (like say Bluehost), a domain (a .com address), and a blogging system (WordPress).
And then you buy a clean & ready-to-use WordPress theme on Creativemarket or Themeforest for $2-20 and install it to your WordPress and boom– you’ve got yourself a beautiful website and it only cost you $50-70 to start your blog and have it for an entire year. If that’s not a small overhead cost, I don’t know what is.
If you’re interested in a website hosting service, I’ve stuck with Bluehost for 10 years and never had a reason to leave. Start your blog for $3.95/month here.
#8 It will open you up to opportunities you could never imagine
You get to meet people like you and make friends with them. You get to work with amazing brands who are just as passionate as you. And you get to do things you never imagined yourself doing. Two years into blogging, I received an email about a “travel gig” with a local network only to find out they wanted me to host their TV show about travel.
I became a TV show host because of my blog
“You want me to what?” I was shocked. Two months later, I was traveling to different destinations across Philippines, Vietnam and China, staying at beautiful hotels and cruises, doing activities I’ve never done and eating things I’ve never eaten. All while getting paid to do it.
Becoming a travel show host was a far-fetched dream of mine that I never imagined it for myself. But it actually became true and it never would have happened if I didn’t start my blog. This opportunity for me could be something different for you like a book, an app, a clothing line, a wedding planner service –anything related to something you love!
