Sometimes eating out for every meal doesn’t fit within your travel budget. I saved $200+ by making my food and eating in. Here are 6 quick & easy meals that you can make from any hotel room!
I had an opportunity to stay with my boyfriend during his work trip in Tokyo (yay for free accommodation!) and after spending from the holidays, I wanted to save money. So we decided to buy groceries from a nearby supermarket and make these meals that don’t require a kitchen. And guess what, I ended up saving $200+!
Watch my video below for the full rundown or scroll down to read!
Meal #1 Milk & Cereal
What quick & easy meal post would this be if I didn’t mention the most obvious one? I usually don’t eat cereal at home but when you’re on-the-go, milk and cereal gets the job done quickly. Don’t forget to buy a paper bowl and utensils or better yet, ask your hotel.
TIP: To keep your cereal from going stale, fold the plastic bag inside of itself (watch my video see how to fold it!)
Meal #2 Instant Oatmeal Cups
I love myself a good oatmeal. These oatmeal cups add an extra convenience because you don’t need a bowl. All you have to do is add hot water and wait a few minutes. Make sure to check if you have a coffee machine or electric kettle to make hot water from. Even a microwave would work!
Meal #3 Panini Sandwich
Here’s where the fun comes in! Aside from the sandwich ingredients, all you need is an iron, an ironing board, and foil. Heat up your iron to the Linen setting (or the hottest setting) with no steam and set aside.
After making your sandwich, wrap your sandwich with 1 layer of foil on both sides of the sandwich, making yourself a sandwich parcel like in my video.
Then with your hot iron, press down down on the sandwich and leave it to toast for 3-4 minutes. Then flip it over and toast the other side for another 3-4 minutes.
Once done, you have yourself a toasted panini with melted cheese and everything! Who needs a panini press when you have an iron!
Meal #4 Tuna Melt
This sandwich is made the same way as the panini sandwich, it’s just a change of ingredients. All you need is bread, tuna, and cheese.
TIP: Make sure to buy tuna from the sachet pack, not from a can otherwise you’d need a can opener. Or buy canned tuna that has a tab to open it.
Meal #5 Tuna & Carrot Salad
Using the same ingredients I use from my sandwich, such as the shredded carrots, tuna, salad greens, and balsamic vinaigrette, why not make a salad? So that’s what I did. I even used the cold cuts container to pop the ingredients in and make a shake shake salad!
No salad bowl or salad mixing needed. Just dance!
Meal #6 Peanut butter & chocolate sandwich
This is what we ate as a snack in the middle of the day. #merienda And what’s not to like about peanut butter and chocolate?
You can make this sandwich the with panini press method to make sure that chocolate comes out melted and delicious!
Drink Sachets
Drink sachets are a great addition so you’re not stuck with water and coffee provided by the hotel. I suggest bringing your favorite drink mixes in sachet form. I bought a ginger & lemon drink mix with added vitamin C for an immune system boost so I don’t get sick with traveling. I suggest you get something similar to that too!
And that’s it! Those were 6 quick & easy meals you can make from your hotel room. I hope I inspired you to cook from your hotel room (or even dorm room!). You can definitely have fun with the meals you make and you’ll also feel a sense of accomplishment knowing you cooked a good meal with just an iron ?
