How to make Indian chai tea. This is the exact recipe my Indian mom makes with everyday.

It’s been getting colder recently and which means I’ve been craving for a spiced drink to warm me up. Then, I remembered the chai tea my mother-in-law made every day when she was visiting my husband and me for a month.  I remember the spicy kick and fresh ginger flavor the first time I had it.

My mom taught me how to make it and she said to share her recipe freely with you guys. So I hope you get to enjoy this homemade chai recipe that you can easily make. It’s not your traditional chai recipe but it’s an easy recipe to recreate at home. You won’t be going back to Starbucks for chai tea lattes anymore 😉

Easy homemade chai tea recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup water – I also like to fill a mug with water and use that amount so the recipe perfectly makes 1 serving
  • 1-2 tablespoons of freshly grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon loose leaf black tea
  • 3-4 cardamom pods, crushed
  • 2-3 cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon of fennel seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Milk to taste – any kind you want, just make sure it’s the full-fat version for extra coziness 😉
  • Sugar or honey to taste

Directions

  1. In a small pot, turn on the heat and pour your water.
  2. Add your ginger, crushed cardamom, cloves, fennel seeds, black pepper, and cinnamon to the pot and bring it to a gentle boil.
  3. Once boiling, add the loose-leaf black tea and boil for 3-4 minutes or follow the instructions on the tea packaging.
  4. Add milk to taste. I like to add 1/8 cup to 1/4 cup of milk.
  5. Add sugar or honey to taste. 2.5 teaspoons are the perfect “sweet but not too sweet” sweetness ?
  6. Pour your chai through a strainer and now you have officially made chai!
  7. Serve alongside biscuits or cookies for the perfect afternoon tea experience.

I hope you enjoy this recipe! You’ll find it easy to make and you won’t be going back to Starbucks or any other cafe for chai tea lattes anymore.
