Holiday Inn Express Singapore Katong had all the amenities I needed for a work trip. Here’s what it’s like to stay at this business-friendly hotel!
Getting There
If you’re coming from Changi Airport, the Holiday Inn Express Singapore Katong is a 15-20 minute car ride and if you take public transportation, you can hop on the 36 bus for a 50 minute to 1-hour ride.
The Hotel
When you arrive at the hotel, you’ll find that there is no bellhop to assist you with your luggage. You actually head straight to the elevators of the building to go to the lobby. The reason for this is Holiday Inn Express removes the luxurious aspects of a luxury hotel for business & leisure travelers who don’t need it like a bellhop, room service, and pool. This is so that they can focus on aspects that business & leisure travelers would appreciate much more such as free breakfast & free wifi.

Amenities
Free breakfast
I go through different food moods when I travel, I either eat healthily or I eat like the world will end tomorrow. With their breakfast buffet, I could satisfy both moods! They had continental breakfast options (eggs, toast, bacon, fruit, salad) and local options which I enjoyed the best (curry, naan, fried noodles, and kaya toast)!
Free wifi
Because I work solely online, you know free wifi is important to me. I didn’t have to worry about paying extra for wifi because those costs can really add up. And I didn’t have any issue streaming content or hopping on video calls– the internet was stable and fast (something I truly treasure based on my recent travels ? Hint: Siargao).
Comfortable beds
I stayed at a few different accommodations in Singapore and I had the best sleep at this hotel. The sheets were just as soft and comfy as the pillows. Even the pillows were labeled “soft” and “firm” so you’d know which pillow to choose.
Power showers
Singaporean summers are crazy hot and humid so you can imagine how sweaty I was whenever I got back to my room. The shower was a walk-in and had a showerhead that could easily slough the dirt off my skin without soap. A few times I just stood there and didn’t want to leave because the shower was so good.
Exploring with the cell phone that comes with the room
I had never heard of a cell phone coming with a hotel room that you can take out, make calls, and take photos with. So I was excited when I heard about the Handy phone. It comes with travel guides for you to use, you can buy tickets to attractions on-the-go, and you can make phone calls with it too. So it’s great if you’re traveling from abroad and don’t have a working cell phone in Singapore. I even used the camera and it comes with skin softening mode! Towards the ends of your stay, you’ll get a notification it that the phone will delete it’s data when you check-out.
Activities
Katong is a colorful, ethnic neighborhood with so many hole-in-the-walls to discover. It’s a great neighborhood if you want to be amongst the locals. Being in this neighborhood actually had me add Singapore to my “Must Live Here” bucket list.
There are quite a few things to do in Katong. It has a strong historical background of the Peranakan community, temples to visit and many food places to eat! My favorite spots to eat in this area were Chin Mee Chin Confectionery for a Singaporean breakfast called kaya toast, 328 Katong Laksa for the best laksa I’ve ever had, and Five Star Kampung Chicken Rice for Singapore’s national dish, chicken rice.
